As I was bringing out the Halloween and fall decor, the boys ran up to me and asked if we could decorate the house to be scary this year. I don’t do scary! I don’t like scary movies, haunted houses, or anything that’s going to frighten me. My thought process is, why would I put myself in a situation to be scared? But, of course, my boys don’t care about that, they enjoy being spooked, and they wanted the decor to be scarier than what I’ve done in the past. So we compromised! I mixed spooky elements while still keeping it cute. Honestly, I love how the mantel turned out! It’s different from my usual style, but I’m here for it. I appreciate that the boys helped me step out of my comfort zone and challenged me to try something new! Here’s how I created this spooky look!

I wouldn’t call myself a DIY girl, but I do enjoy it every once in a while. Especially when I can’t find the items I’ve pictured in my head. That’s exactly what happened when I was making the garland and the trees.

I envisioned a mossy, vine-like garland but couldn’t find anything I liked, so I decided to make it myself! I took individual hanging moss vines and zip-tied them together to create the garland. It was super easy to make and turned out just as I imagined.

The moment I found these light-up trees, I knew I had to place them inside a cauldron! I was right; they look so cool! I got an 18-inch cauldron and cut a piece of cardboard to fit its circumference. Then, I cut a slit down the middle and made a circle large enough for the tree trunk. I placed the tree in the cauldron, made sure to pull out the cord, and surrounded it with moss to cover the cardboard. It looks just like a spooky, planted tree and adds perfect height to the sides of my mantel.

The rest of the decorating was simple! I sourced all the pieces from Amazon, Target, Michaels, and Wayfair. The base of this entire design is the spider web, which literally held everything in place! I was able to tangle the spiders with the web, and they stayed securely in position. I was seriously amazed at how strong these webs were! Once the base was done, I just had to add all the pieces on the mantel ledge and space them out evenly. The haunted houses and skeletons look so cute next to the pumpkins.

The final touch to complete the look was sticking bats on the wall! I arranged them to look like they were coming out of the haunted house, which finished off the spooky vibe perfectly!

The boys loved the final result and think I did a great job at making it spooky! This was the perfect way to kick off my holiday home decorating, and I’m looking forward to the next holidays!
